Summer Special 2008 #2: Cisco Ottawa Bluesfest

It was an amazing 10 out of the 11 days for enjoying Cisco Ottawa Bluesfest. I ended up with a nice tan and sore legs. My favorite top acts were Feist, Stars, The Most Serene Republic, Jim Bryson, much more. What I missed out were Snoop Dogg, The Wailers, Born Ruffians, and Tokyo Police Club because the reasons were the hot weather and schedule conflicts.
One of my favorite moments at Bluesfest was text messaging my brother to get to Feist's concert before it started. He was at the Wintersleep concert when I saw the photographers in the stage pit. My brother tells me later that he had to jump over the fence to get to the pit. Afterwards, he tells me he was disappointed with Feist due to low lighting. I talked to a photographer the day later and he was disappointed having to take photos for Feist and also told me another photographer was also angry with the low lighting. Another favorite moment was being backstage for the Plain White T's and again for Friday night's lineup for The Love Machine, Jetplanes of Abraham and Metric. Another favorite moment was catching the flowers two times at the Stars concert.

Summer Special 2008 #1: Canada Day and Basia Bulat

Happy Canada Day! Here's a photo from downtown Ottawa in the afternoon.
Check out the photos from the Basia Bulat concert at Confederation Park. As usual, Basia Bulat was very nice and down to earth. She was even surprised by the Ottawa crowd because they knew when to clap along. I guess it's thanks to loyal fans of Basia. :)

The First Saturday of Summer 2008 Happenings - S3E26

It was a busy Saturday for June 21, 2008. As you see from the photo. I had a lion dance performance at Ottawa Dragon Boat Race Festival. We have been performing at the dragon boat race for several years and the festival has been around for 15 years. I had a privilege to participate at the dragon boat race a decade ago. There's a funny story back in 1998, it was a rainy day and I tried to find my teammates and probably by purpose, I started to tumbled down the hill and my sandals flew in the air. What happened? Someone caught and somehow lay on the ground for a group photo. Memories at the dragon boat race have been great and funny. What also feels great to performing at the festival (aside from the long wait to perform) is having Max Keeping introduce us. It is great to see the Ottawa Dragon Boat Race Festival continue to prosper year after year.
Check out the photos from the opening ceremonies from the dragon boat race. This time, the photos were used from the Canon EOS 30D.
Another performance we had was at the Crowne Plaza Hotel and was for the Canadian Olympics Gymnastics Team Gala. The significance is that it counts down to the Beijing Olympics in August. After the performance, I decided to check out a house concert and the performing act was Canadian indie rock band, Shapes and Sizes. Here are photos via my brother's Flickr link.
Last, but not least, this is my entry to finish off series 3 of my blog for the Summer break. I will be having a couple of Summer specials for the coming weeks and months. Series 4 will return sometime in the Fall.

Another Day at Westfest - S3E25

It was another exciting but hot day at Westfest. This time, I was with my lion dance troupe and we paraded down Richmond Road for Westfest's On The Street program. Luckily it did not rain on us during our parade down Richmond Road but the guys worked up a lot of sweat.

A Westfest With Grand Analog and Joel Plaskett - S3E24

It was an amazing Friday night at Westfest because their concert lineup consisted of Hurray for Higgsfield, i see rowboats, Matthew Barber and the Union Dues, Grand Analog, Land of Talk and Joel Plaskett Emergency. The host for Friday's National Night was none other than Amanda Putz. She's just the best host/MC around and amazed she did not goof up unlike her stint on her weekday morning show on CBC Radio 3.
I was there since 4pm (I'm probably lying, LOL) until around 11pm. I was somewhat worried about the hot weather but the concert ground was shaded and there was a breeze. The last time I saw Joel Plaskett was at Winterlude in February and I basically froze to death. Let's say that I stood for over 2 hours. This time it's the reverse and still a great crowd for the indie rocker.
I got into a bit of trouble at the end of the concert because the members of Grand Analog remembered and recognized me from the Fuse taping in November and through MySpace. Let's say that the security was not pleased about giving the artist pass. It was somewhat a funny moment because the members of Grand Analog and myself were causing a bit of trouble entering the VIP section.
I was happy to see Ming (not my twin brother) and Saeed come to Westfest and check out Grand Analog and a bit of Joel Plaskett Emergency. I wish they had a chance to meet Odario and the gang. Hopefully next time when they return to Ottawa for a gig.
As you from the photo on top, that was taken after the concert and it was nice of the group and Joel Plaskett to join in for the photo op.
For those who missed it (you know who you are), you should of went and checked it out because it would of been a fun time.

Said The Whale and Dan Mangan at Mercury Lounge - S3E23

Last night, I went to the Mercury Lounge for the Dan Mangan with Said The Whale concert. It was an excellent concert because I usually listen to them on CBC Radio 3 and getting to talk to members of Said The Whale were nice and cool. If it wasn't for Amanda Putz appearing, she wouldn't reveal that I am one of the blog posters on R3's website. There were some funny moments during Said The Whale's performance. The lead singer's glass water was spilled and then his beer "exploded" and later on, the keyboardist's glockenspiel fell. My own funny moment, towards the end of Dan Mangan's performance, there was a standing ovation and I was trying to stand up but fell back on the couch but got back up. The photo on top is with three members of Said The Whale.

Hot Weather at The Black Sheep Inn - S3E22

Oh my goodness, Summer has arrived and it couldn't come at a better time. Except the heat and sweat, I got a chance to go The Black Sheep Inn for the third time. As you see from the photo, I wanted to show the scenic background to Wakefield, Quebec. I couldn't do it last time because of the weather. It looks like I am basking in the glory being in Wakefield. It was not as hot there due to the shade and the lake/river.
Why was I there? It was a radio taping for CBC Radio 2's Canada Live program. The singers were Kyrie Kristmanson and Nathan Lawr & The Minotaurs. It was an enjoyable and funny performance.
Prior to the taping, I decided to try out poutine at the restaurant beside The Black Sheep Inn. It was one big poutine I got and it was fulfilling. Another memorable moment was seeing Rolf Klausener of The Acorn in Wakefield. My reaction was pretty funny as I kind of jumped up on my seat with a shocked look saying "What the!" in my head. Good thing he said hi and so on. In a way, it was an exciting Saturday night at Wakefield.

The Final Four Days of May - S3E21

What a way to finish up May with a couple of events I went to. It has been awhile that May is my favorite month of the year. With the festivals starting and Summer on the horizon, there couldn't be a fun time to have it. Onto the events that I have done from the final four days.
First up was on May 28th, 2008, I had a liondance performance at The Canadian Museum of Civilization. It was a gala event by The Children's Bridge Foundation's (photo on top). I was surprised to see politicians attend the event and I missed out seeing activist, Craig Kielburger. Overall, it was a good performance and it has been not too long I haven't been on the tail. Second was The Chutney n' Chopsticks Cabaret at Club Saw on May 29th. It was part of Asian Heritage Month. I received an email from Amanda Putz the week before the event. I checked out the event and it was entertaining and funny. Great to see diversity work out. Photos (taken by my bro) on here, [Link 2].
Third is not really an event but I went to watch Sex and the City, the movie. It was released on May 30th. I was forced and reluctant to watch it and not being an avid of the series. The movie was not bad and it's enjoyable but I did not realize the movie was about 2 in a half hours. It's good for the females but not good for males who aren't familiar with the TV series.
On the final day of May (the 31st), I went to a house concert hosted by Rolf of The Acorn. The bands performed were Special Noise, Mandibles and Play Guitar. It was a different setting going to a house concert. I didn't realize that the music was loud. I was worried about my friend not liking the kind of music. At least he enjoyed the food there. I was pretty hungry and almost ate all of the food provided. It was just carrots and tortillas.

Well, June is upon us and I got a few events to go to. I hope to write a few entries as I can finish up season three.

Cool and Warm Runnings In Ottawa - S3E20

Finally, May has become my favorite month of the year again because of the mild and cool weather and it is the start of the festival season in Ottawa. As you see from the photo with Masia One, I checked out CBC Bandwidth live at Ottawa Race Weekend. The live taping was on May 24, 2008 and it included performances by Hilotrons, Amanda Rheaume and Abdominal.

It was a great "live" taping and I did not expect to meet Masia One because I have her on Facebook and I think still on MySpace. I had kept in contact in some form for a couple of years. What was unexpectedly cool was that she gave me a DVD and CD of her music video and upcoming tracks from her album (to be release in June). Abdominal is another surprise because I watched an episode of R3TV where he went to England and chowed down on unusual foods. Here is the link from Youtube and warning, it is not for the weak or full stomach, R3TV Episode #38 - "Un-Rapped: A Food Diary". I told Abdominal that I liked video and I did not get grossed out. I was like wanting to crave on the foods he ate.
At the event, I was so worried about getting sunburned as there was no shade outside Ottawa City Hall. My feet were partially sunburned as I wore sandals for the whole day. My feet looks like tiger stripes and I should go back to wearing shoes for the time being. It is my first time to check out Ottawa Race Weekend and I was astounded by the amount people being out for this event.

Other past happenings, I went to watch Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull on Thursday. How did I think of the movie? It was an enjoyable film but I found the plot about the crystal skull to be silly. Still, it is worth watching at the theatres.
I still haven't watch Iron Man yet. Do not expect me to watch it.

A Fun and Exciting First Saturday of May - S3E19

It has been an exciting Saturday to kick off May because I had a lion dance performance outside Parliament Hill. The performance was a rally planned by the university Chinese/International students associations in support of the Beijing Olympics. Even though her concert ended right at 11pm, it was a fantastic to say the least. The turnout was not as packed when I went to other gigs. Overall, she delivered a good concert.
What a way to kick off May. It started on Thursday, May 1st at The Bay in Rideau Centre for a lion dance performance to promote their Summer clothing and apparel for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Festival season in Ottawa has kicked off with the Canadian Tulip Festival. Our lion dance will be performing this Saturday (May 10). I don't know if Major's Hill Park is free to get in during The Canadian Tulip Festival.
I got my tickets for the Cisco Ottawa Bluesfest. I can't wait to see Feist again and check out the Canadian indie artists again too.

On Sunday afternoon, I was listening Brian Leung's program (in Cantonese) and I was so happy to hear Stay (Faraway, So Close!) by U2 and All Good Things (Come to an End) by Nelly Furtado. Stay is considered one of my favorite U2 songs. As for All Good Things (Comes to an End), it feels so 2007 and I haven't heard it for awhile.
Phew, that's all I have to cover for now.

Spring Has Sprung and Different Shoes - S3E18

Finally, Spring has arrived in Ottawa but it feels more like early Summer. On Thursday, it hit close to 20 degrees Celsius. After the snowstorm debacle in March, the warm temperature is a nice relief. The worse part is having to rake the front lawn. I am slowly recovering from my back pain.
On Thursday night, I went to the Born Ruffians with Young Rival and Giant Hand at Zaphod Beeblebrox. As you see from the photo on top, it was pretty hot at Zaphod's. After leaving Zaphod's, it was a relief to be outside and cool off.
Oh yea, I wore 3 pairs of shoes in the span of 2 days. I finally wore my adidas shoe. For the shoes I wore for the Born Ruffians concert, it was the Converse shoes. I wanted to feel like the Tenth Doctor (Doctor Who). On Thursday morning, I wore the usual Asic blue shoes, which is becoming wrecked.

Stars Concert in Ottawa from Thursday Night - S3E17

On Thursday night (April 3, 2008), Stars came to Ottawa for a gig at The Bronson Centre. The funny thing was that my bro and I decided to wait outside of the Bronson Centre at 3pm to get the front row seats. All the wait was somewhat worth it.
Overall, it was a great concert but I thought the sound coming from the mic didn't come out clearly. Still, the crowd was awesome and loud for Stars. Pictured above are Evan Cranley and Torquil Campbell. It was nice to wait outside at the back of the Bronson Centre and getting some autographs and photos with the members of Stars.
I was also wondering if my friend (shameless plug) who is in Boston had a chance to meet up with Stars when they were performing there. Hmmmm... I wish I could know about it.
Oh! I still love my new Roots hat. Gotta love that ~~Castro~~/~~Che~~, Freedom hat. :)

5 Years On, Remembering Leslie Cheung - S3E16

It has been 5 years since Leslie Cheung's death and how time has flown by so fast. April 1st is always consider a sad day for fans of Leslie Cheung. For the past week, I kept thinking on what to write for the 3rd year about remembering Leslie Cheung. I hope I can come with a good entry for the 3rd year. Till this day, Leslie Cheung is still a popular performer, whether it is in acting or singing, he was one of a kind for talent. Nowadays, we see performers go for the money and it is no more on the performing for a living side.
As I was listening to a radio program from Hong Kong on the Internet sometime last week (March 24, 2008), this RTHK DJ said that fans still want to see him, listen to him and care about him. It almost brought me to tears when hearing 無需要太多 (English translation, Don't Need Too Much). All I can say that his music and movies will still live on forever.

I feel blessed that I have kept in contact with other DJs from Hong Kong about Leslie Cheung and other kinds of music. You know who you are if you get to read this.

A Return to the Black Sheep Inn - S3E15

I never expected to go back to the Black Sheep Inn on Saturday night. I went to The Acorn's concert at the wonderful small venue in Wakefield, Quebec. It was another usual "surprise" of sorts to see Amanda Putz again! At least she was with her CBC Radio in Ottawa colleagues. I get to see Alan Neal in person for the second time (TV appearance doesn't count), but I don't know if he's getting used to seeing me.... yet. Although, I have him (well, his radio program) on MySpace to lean on for contacting.
I wasn't planning to go to The Acorn's concert until my bro begged to go and they recently returned from their US tour and attending SXSW Festival in Austin, Texas.
Prior to going to the concert, I spent some time going to Rideau Centre to kill time and unexpectedly buy something. As you see on the photo on top with Putzy and myself doing the gangster look, I got a new hat at Roots. Even though, I lucked on the CBC Radio 3 ~~Castro~~, Freedom hat, I decided to go for the Roots hat that similarly looks like the R3 hat. I also saw Sarim at Rideau Centre and it helped me killed time as well. I only discussed about certain people and concerts I have been attending. I was, well still having back pain. It was great to see friends around and The Acorn concert did help my spirits up even though I am enduring back pain. The Acorn concert was very enjoyable and there was funny jokes during the gig.

Basia Bulat in Ottawa Again - S3E14

On Thursday, I went to the Basia Bulat concert at Zaphod Beeblebrox. I was glad that Basia still remembers my bro and myself. Although, the funny thing was that she forgot my name. Another funny moment as we were checking Basia and her band were on sound check, I was standing near my bro and out of nowhere, Amanda Putz appears and I made a funny surprise gesture because she just came out of nowhere.
All in all, the concert with Katie Stelmanis and Amos The Transparent were excellent. I didn't expect to see a lot of people to see Basia Bulat. I am guessing Basia is becoming a word of mouth.

Meeting Bands and Dealing With Snow in March - S3E13

I apologize for not having an entry for March and here I am trying to write an entry. All I can say that it has been a crazy time with the free time I still have.
There were a lot of things happening.

- March 9, I got Super Smash Bros. Brawl for the Nintendo Wii, 'nuff said. Let's say that it was after the massive snowstorm and was barely able to get Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

- March 13, I went to The National Gallery of Canada for this event called "Are You In?" It was a March Break event for the teens. I know I am not a teen but I came out in support of Amanda Putz and to check out The Love Machine because they are getting played on CBC Radio 3. I also got to see former MuchMusic VJ/host, Jennifer Hollett at the event. What I didn't know was that Amanda Putz had CBC Radio 3 goodies and I wanted to get the ~~Castro~~, I mean Freedom hat, but I got a R3 t-shirt and R3 buttons with the 4 mascots instead. Coming up, I will be seeing Immaculate Machine again on Good Friday as they will be with Ladyhawk at Zaphod Beeblebrox. On Thursday March 27, I cannot wait to check out Basia Bulat again but at Zaphod Beeblebrox. Hopefully she still remembers from the Hayden concert back in January.
In early April, I will finally get to go to the Stars concert at the Bronson Centre.

Eventful Weekend - S3E12

What a weekend! Aside from the debacle on Friday, February 15, 2008. I did enjoy The Joel Plaskett Emergency concert at Winterlude Not to take pot shots at my friends (well, one of them), I just wish either opened up to any kind of Canadian independent music and try out CBC Radio 3.
After the concert, I had a chance to get meet Joel Plaskett and get picture with him as you from above the entry. I was also wondering if I find Amanda Putz at the concert but to no avail. :)

Saturday night was one of a doozy. I had a birthday dinner and a lion dance performance. The birthday dinner was Avant Garde Bar in downtown Ottawa. They serve Russian food and usual drinks and liquors. I finally tried Absinthe because I have been curious for so long. The verdict? Oh my! It has a strong black licorice taste. I did not hallucinate. Don't worry if I was acting up or passed out drinking it. All in all, it was great to see people there for Saturday but missing were the people I know. Oh well, hopefully they better make it up to me.
As for the lion dance performance prior to returning to Avant Garde Bar and drinking Abinthe, it was for the Mauritius community of Ottawa and it was held at the Bob Macquarrie Recreation Complex in Orleans.

Old Stomping Grounds - S3E11

On Saturday morning, I had another lion dance performance at a Chinese school I used to go. It was for their Chinese New Year activities at the Chinese school. I also had this feeling of nostalgia when returning to the Saturday school. All in all, the performance went out well. As you see on the photo on top, that was me doing the Northern Lion.

Another nostalgic moment was this past week when I got in contact with someone back from Chinese school. I really have a good memory when remembering people from the past and it feels nice to keep in touch.

Other funny things to mention in this entry.
I was listening to RTHK Radio 2 and was listening to a program called 百花爭艷二台靚歌喜迎春 (Reunion Songs Special). Alyson Hau was a guest on the show and I never knew she was nervous having to sing on radio, here is her blog entry, http://hk.myblog.yahoo.com/alysonhau/article?mid=1044

Due to ever unexpected programming changes at CBC Radio 3, I missed the first hour of Amanda Putz's program on web radio. Well, I got to listen on Sunday and I foolishly recorded it. Why? She said "Kung Hei Fat Choy."

Happy Chinese New Year - The Year of the Rat: S3E10

It's been awhile I have not written an entry since the beginning of 2008. All I can say it's Chinese New Year, Kung Hey Fat Choy! It's the year of the Rat.
Phew, I had 6 performances on Thursday. I will be sore for Friday.
First performance was at Royal Bank on Wellington Street and it went out pretty well.
Second performance was at Algonquin College at their food court to celebrate Chinese New Year for the international students.
Third performance was at retirement home. It was the first time to try out the smaller lion and using the costumed pants.
Fourth performance was at an elementary school near Carleton University. The children participated in becoming a lion. It was great to see smiles out of the children.
Fifth performance was at the Chinese Community building and the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration was on hand for Chinese New Year.
The sixth and final performance (pictured on top) was at Chu Shing Restaurant. It was for the Hong Kong Business Assocation Chinese New Year Banquet.
What a day to have lots of performances.

Happy 2008 and a first post to start off the new year. What I ended up doing on New Year's Eve?

Got to check out the fireworks at Major's Hill Park at 18:57pm. It was The Grand Finale - Downtown Musical Fireworks. It was to close out the 150 Anniversary of Ottawa being chosen as Canada's capital. It was a cold time having to wait for it. At least the weather was not as bad. Overall, the fireworks were nice to watch.

Oh yea, from my music picks of 2007. I forgot to leave out some other songs that were popular but they were not part of my picks.

What to say about 2007? It has been a wonderful year that I enjoyed. There has been ups and downs this year.

January: A favorable moment that I can tell was on January 10, 2007. I finally bought a Nintendo Wii. Here's the story, I waited for the whole morning at Carlingwood Mall and then I was close to leaving the mall until I saw the Purolator guy and then I finally got it. Due to my dumb thinking, I didn't go back home and instead went to Carleton University. I was totally worried having to carry the Wii but it was humourous too because I was carrying like a goof.

February: One "defining" moment was February 12, 2007 when the lion dance troupe had a performance at the National Gallery of Canada. It was for the 18th Annual CAO Sweetheart Lunch for the Arts. What happened later on was that the Mayor of Ottawa, Larry O'Brien made a bombshell announcment that he wouldn't be funding the arts in Ottawa. The new media made a big deal the next day when our lion dance troupe "scared" the Mayor. It was unbelievable that one of the lions was on the front page of the Ottawa newspapers.
Another thing was that I didn't know Jim Bryson (Amanda Putz's favorite musician) was at the event. I will explain Amanda Putz from the September section.

Aside from that, I finally went to Winterlude on February 18, 2007. It was the final day of Winterlude and I went along with my friends to Jacques Cartier Park in Gatineau, Quebec. Before walking down to the park, we had a tough time walking from Byward Market to the park. It was pretty brutal. All in all, it was fun going to Jacques Cartier Park. April: Not much happened in March and semi-fast forward to April. A memorable moment was on April 28, 2007. That was when I stayed up so late to finish up a take-home exam. How is it memorable? Well, it was the final assignment to end off my term in university. I was kept company and listened to music all over in Hong Kong. I messaged Alyson Hau to play "All Good Things (Come to an End)" by Nelly Furtado because the song meant that all good things come to an end as I finally finish my studies at Carleton University. It was bittersweet to be finally done with university.

May: The only moment was on May 31, 2007 and it was the sold out Feist concert at Bronson Centre. I got a good view at the concert and the only downside was that my brother could not use the D-SLR camera. For whatever reason, I guess it had to do with copyrights because D-SLR cameras bring out a perfect image. All in all, it was an amazing concert and one of the precursors to getting into Canadian independent music.

The only down part was seeing a very close family friend pass away. It was in early May.

June: The big day happened and it was on June 12, 2007. That was when I had my convocation at Carleton University. The worse part was that I was sweating from waiting at the old gym at Carleton and to make things worse, the Field House was not cold too. It was nice to shake hands with astronaut and Carleton University chancellor, Marc Garneau. I finally get my degree in Political Science and a minor in Canadian Studies.

There were the usual things I have done like the lion dance performance at the Dragon Boat Race Festival in Ottawa. I also checked out Montreal on June 23, 2007 and I haven't been to Montreal since 2002 for Just For Laughs.

July: July 15, 2007 was when I went to the Kanye West concert at Cisco Ottawa Bluesfest. It was a great concert but it was also a rainy night and ended up getting my hat soaked. It was great to hear old and new songs like "Touch The Sky" and "Stronger".

August: August 17-19, 2008, went to Toronto and on Saturday, August 18, 2007, checked out the Rogers Chinese Lantern Festival.

September: Starting off September, on the 2nd of that month, I went to Camp Fortune Aerial Park. It was a fun and challenging having to climb and swing down wires. On September 11, 2007, I finally met Amanda Putz at the CBC Ottawa Broadcast Centre for the second FUSE taping but I missed the "season premiere" taping from a week earlier. Why is it significant? Well, I got in contact with her via MySpace in early 2007. Originally, I did not know she left to Hong Kong in Summer of 2006. So, I left an email to CBC Bandwidth but it was too late. In the email, I told her to meet up this person in Hong Kong. What did surprise me in early 2007 was that Amanda did get in contact with Alyson Hau as I was skimming through her MySpace. I was totally astounded because it felt coincidental that Amanda would get to meet Alyson Hau. Amanda got to host a indie show by the same name from CBC Radio One (excluding Toronto on Saturdays) on RTHK Radio 3 for several months. The thing is that I am used to her as a radio host but it's different that she is a radio DJ as well as she is also a host for CBC Radio 3. Prior to her return to Ottawa, she was one of the benefactors to getting me into Canadian independent music. Another thing I forgot is that Amanda Putz is a Saskatchewanian. Since September 2006, I encountered a few graduate Journalism students from Saskatchewan. It was a feeling different having to hang out with them because I was the lone person from Ottawa and see a different perspective from those amazing people. I think Amanda Putz is the last person from Saskatchewan that I have encountered. Aside from the Saskatchewan Rough Riders winning the 2007 Grey Cup, it is time to end my experience of knowing people from Saskatchewan. Overall, she is a great person and without you informing about CBC Radio 3 on the Internet, I wouldn't get into Canadian indie music. It was also nice to have you mention me on-air during the Web Radio broadcast.

On September 30, 2007, I got to check Mont. Tremblant. It is a great place for skiing, but I went with no snow. Going to the summit was breathtaking.

Rounding out October through December:
- Several lion dance performance from Double Ten to the Canadian Olympic Committee.
- Went to several CBC Fuse tapings and one memorable taping was at the Black Sheep Inn in Wakefield, QC. Maybe Smith and Christine Fellows. [Flick link]
- The Acorn concert at Barrymore's Music Hall. A funny moment was when I was sitting and watching, Amanda Putz taps my shoulder and she was taking photos.

Holiday Wrapup - TV Viewing on Christmas - S3E8

Of all the Christmas programming throughout December, I was more than pleased to watch the Doctor Who Christmas Special 2007. The episode title called "Voyage of the Damned" and it also guest-starred Kylie Minogue. What did I think of the episode? As spoiler free as I can be, it was another excellent Christmas special for the Time Lord but it was last time that I felt sad watching the series since "The Girl In The Fireplace" from Series 2 in 2006. What a way to feel bummed out during the Christmas holiday in 2007.
How did I think of Kylie Minogue? She was great and overall, I found the cast and story to be strong on the third Christmas special.
I was more happy to watch Doctor Who Confidential at Christmas 2007 because they played clips from Kylie Minogue's hit songs. Songs like "Can't Get You Out of My Head", "I Should Be So Lucky" and "The Locomotion."

Year-end Roundup: Music 2007 [Update on Dec. 28: Links Added]

2007 has been an interesting year for music. Legal downloads from Apple iTunes, Amazon and other retailers continue to dominate the way music is being sold to the consumers. What else was groundbreaking was Apple finally come out with DRM-free songs. The only major record label to sign on to iTunes Plus was EMI.
- Other notable happenings were Kanye West's Graduation versus 50 Cent's Curtis on September 11, 2007. Kanye West beat 50 Cent in album sales.
- The horrendous performance by Britney Spears from the 2007 MTV VMAs, 'nuff said on Britney. Not going to explain about her current album.
- Madonna leaving Warner Bros. Music to Live Nation Inc.
- Live Earth happened on July 7, 2007.
- Feist becoming a surprise in the United States and internationally.
- The Spice Girls reunite and have a comeback concert.

Concerts I attended were Feist in May and Kanye West at Bluesfest in July. Those two concerts were amazing. Feist was one of the benefactors to getting into Canadian independent music. Kanye West was just fun but it happened in the soaking rain.
Near the end of the year, I enjoyed Canadian indie artists concerts like The Acorn and The Russian Futurists. Even though, tickets for big name artists are expensive, I found that going to a smaller venue like Barrymore's Music Hall felt more worth it. I felt more appreciative to Canadian indie artists.

My Top Songs of 2007 (Links from Wikipedia);

1. Umbrella by Rihanna. I chose Umbrella because it was 10 weeks on the UK singles chart and that I got hooked to the song. Plus, people kept singing "ella ella eh eh eh" where to the point it got annoying and overplayed. I even annoyed Alyson Hau on occasion.

2. Stronger by Kanye West. Even though the song was sampled from Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger by Daft Punk. I found the song catchy and smart coming from Kanye West. I also liked the music video which featured Daft Punk and R&B singer, Cassie. Plus, it was filmed in Japan and gave a nod to the anime, Akira.

3. 1234 by Feist. Nuff said on this song because Feist accomplished her popularity. The iPod nano TV ad elevated her status in the United States.

4. No One by Alicia Keys. I know this song is almost a latecomer to 2007. It is still a great song coming from Alicia Keys.

5. All Good Things (Come to an End) by Nelly Furtado. This song meant a lot to me because it felt like things were coming to an end as I finished my academic term at Carleton University. Refer back to previous blog entry.

6. The Way I Are by Timbaland featuring Keri Hilson & D.O.E.). This song caught my attention because at first, Keri Hilson sounded like Jennifer Lopez. The rest is history as this song rose to the top 10 charts around the world.

7. When You're Gone by Avril Lavigne. This power ballad song grew on me when I was in Toronto in the middle of August. It was played a lot and it was the time when Avril Lavigne went to Hong Kong.

8. Makes Me Wonder by Maroon 5. I still like this song because it seemed fresh coming from Maroon 5. It was also big jumper when it debuted on Billboard's Hot 100 Singles chart.

9. My Moon My Man by Feist. This is my favorite song because it was the first released on The Reminder. The video made it one of my favorites to watch because Feist is dancing through the flat escalators.

10. Song 4 Mutya (Out of Control) by Groove Armada & Mutya. I kept 'grooving' to this song from my iPod and that I haven't listened to a lot of Britpop songs lately.

Favorite Canadian Indie Songs. It's in no particular order. Since September, I have been enjoying Canadian independent songs from CBC Radio 3. I just hope none of the hosts are reading this as I've become fans of them. You know who you are. Hmmm, one being a guest host and the other being based in Ottawa.

Another Fuse Taping I Attended... No Joke and Christmas Planning - S3E7

Yes, there was another taping for CBC's FUSE and it was an early hour than usual Fuse tapings. The performers were Michael Kaeshammer and Hayley Sales.

Overall, it was a great performance from the two musicians.
*Spoiler* There was a bit of a Christmas feel when Hayley Sales sang Happy Xmas (War is Over) by John Lennon.

The holidays is approaching and I have been thinking of planning a Christmas get together at my place for the second year. That means I have to clean up the house, get a few gifts for the so-called gift exchange and think of food to make. I cross my fingers that the second year of my Christmas get together would be better.

A reminder that I am planning to have my picks of the top songs of 2007. What are my favorites of 2007. Wait and find out.
Aside from the Canadian independent music scene, I am still liking the current #1 song on Billboard's Hot 100 Singles, "No One" by Alicia Keys.

One comment I totally left out and I was suppose to write it on a previous blog entry. I am enjoying these kinds of concerts (mainly The Acorn and The Russian Futurists concert) because it is smaller and costs less to get tickets than going to a big-wig concert. Briefly chatting with independent artists makes it fun for myself because I find they are approachable and they don't leave right away. It gives me experience to socializing and mingling with these kinds of people.

Tuesday Night's Fuse Taping - S3E6

This might be a spoiler because the airdate for Fuse will be on January 12, 2008. I really enjoyed Tuesday night's taping of FUSE. The performers were Grand Analog and Dr. Draw. I was happy to see Grand Analog perform because the last time I went to a different CBC radio taping, they were in Ottawa. The funny thing was that I added Odario William on MySpace after the Glen Gould special for CBC Radio 2 and a few days later, he messaged me how he liked my display picture.
Overall, it was the best FUSE taping and a kind of a make up of sorts because I didn't get to go to The Sadies and Gord Downie fusing.

Lion Dance Performance at The Brookstreet Hotel - S3E5

I had a great performance tonight at the Brookstreet Hotel in Kanata. What was the significance of the performance? It was for the COC (Canadian Olympic Committee)'s 2008 Media Summit. It was the first time checking the hotel and also the first time to perform there. It is a nice and elegant hotel. Very luxurious and regal since it seems high-end and located in the hi-tech sector in Kanata. I wish I had a chance to see which of the current Summer Olympic athletes was at the event.
I will have a second performance this Thursday but it is another Olympic related event but different from the event at Brookstreet Hotel because it's done by a different organizer. It will be at the Hilton Lac Leamy.

Friday Night at Barrymore's Music Hall: The Acorn Concert - S3E4

It was the first time in my life that I finally went to Barrymore's Music Hall. When I went inside, I was stunned to see how decorative the building is like.
Friday, November 16, 2007 was The Acorn's concert and it was live to tape for CBC Radio One (Bandwidth) and Two (Canada Live). All I can say that the concert was great but the sound level was way too loud. My ears is somewhat at 80% in hearing range.
It was also convenient to see Amanda Putz at the concert. I told her I wished I went to the Fuse taping with The Sadies and Gord Downie of The Tragically Hip. She told me it was packed. I mentioned about how she talked about growing up liking New Kids on the Block on her web radio show. Why I find it funny? It was because she mentioned it back on April 30th's edition of The Morning Brew with Alyson Hau as fill-in hosts on RTHK.
Overall, The Acorn with Bruce Peninsula & Male Nurse concert was excellent. Another funny story, when The Acorn sang the second song, someone tapped me in the back. 'lo and behold! It was Amanda Putz and she was taking pics. I was surprised to see a former student from Bell High School.

I am trying to get used to the MacBook KB styled Apple Wireless Keyboard. I like the small and thin look. I need to get used to the buttons on the keyboard. I am typing fast at times and feel like I am making mistypes along the way.

WildWorks Extra For November 3-4, 2007

My total apologies for not keeping up the week in review. If you read my previous blog entry, you will know why.

Music - Well, it happened and the new album of Britney Spears was released. Even though, I downloaded on iTunes, I have not listened to the album yet.

Another surprise shocker was the music video premiere of the new song by The Spice Girls. Headlines (Friendship Never Ends) premiered on November 2. My opinion, it is a good song because it will be in my head probably until the Christmas holiday, but the video is left to be desired.

Blogger's Block(?) - S3E3

It has been an uneventful final two weeks of October. Minus the fact that there was excitement on October 26, 2007. Well, I got Apple's Mac OS X Leopard. All I can say that it's great and I have enjoyed the new look. Another was going to Saunders Farm with friends and some videos have been posted up on Facebook "exclusively" (for FB users).
For the lack of updates, I must be suffering from (pardon the pun) blogger's block. I couldn't think of a way to write an entry after the exciting first two weeks of October. I hope I can make up some ground for November.

I'm still enjoying CBC Radio 3 web radio. Still loving the hosts and Canadian independent music.

It's this time of year again and it's become my tradition as I got another toque from Roots for the Winter season. Although, it is a month early but I was too eager to use the Roots gift certificate from Air Miles. A pic of me (using Photo Booth, no duh) will be coming soon as I am still wearing my 2006-2007 toque. The toque will retire when snow drops on the ground.

It's October! - S3E2

I like to apologize for the lack of updates on my blog. Reasons were that I was sick for the past few weeks in September. The unpredictable change in the weather caused me to get a cold, sore throat and a cough. I have recovered since but with minor coughing.
I hope to get back into blogging again and to get "Extra" into a weekly basis.

WildWorks Extra for September 15-16, 2007

Entertainment - We all know what happened in the world of music. Britney flopped in her performance at the 2007 MTV VMAs. She was lip syncing, out of shape and out of touch. Her new song is catchy but whether I will get it is out of the question.
The other news being Kanye West versus 50 Cent. Graduation vs. Curis in the battle of Hip-Hop album. We all know that Kanye West would beat 50 Cent in album sales. Whether 50 Cent will own up to his word that he would "retire" if he loses to Kanye.

Around Ottawa - Coming up in Ottawa is the Ottawa International Animation Festival.
Another event I will be going is the Benefit Screening - The Burundi Film Centre. That will be on Wednesday at Library and Archives Canada.

A New Start... Not Entirely Yet, But a Brand New Season - S3E1

Not a new start in my life yet, but it's now "season 3" for my wonderful blog.
I had a jam packed week to officially kick off the new season.
From September 10-15, 2007;

Monday - I got a call from a friend and we watched Harry Potter & The Order of The Phoenix.

Tuesday - I finally went to a radio taping of CBC Radio's Fuse at CBC Ottawa Broadcast Centre in downtown Ottawa. The host being the returning Amanda Putz, who recently returned from Hong Kong and did a stint for RTHK Radio 3, the English radio station in Hong Kong. I finally get to meet her because she got to hang out with a DJ that I usually talk to. It was an unusual link to who I know. What a way to start off the new season.
The performers were Andrew Cash and Jenn Grant. It aired this weekend and it was a good edited down broadcast.

Wednesday - It's the usual, go to the comic store and usually talk about what's happening in the news, pop culture and sports. One of the debates discussed was Kanye West and 50 Cent's new album. I won't get much into it because it will be covered on WildWorks Extra.

Thursday - Went to Avant-Garde Bar and Gift Shop in downtown. It is near Rideau Centre. What was happening? It was an event to celebrate Found Magazine's 5th issue. Even though I don't drink, I was interested in eating. What I had was crepés. For some funny reason, I was interested in ordering caviar. The crepés I chose was called Bliny 5, it was crepés with smoked salmon, salmon caviar and sour cream. It was delicious per se. All in all, it was a fun night going to the place.

Friday - I went to another radio taping at CBC. It was FUSE again and the performers were Wendy McNeill and Lori Yates. The crowds were not as packed at Tuesday's because it was a Friday night. That taping will be airing on the weekend of September 22-23 on CBC Radio 1 & 2.

Saturday - Again chilled with my friend, Leo to watch some movies at AMC Theatre at night. We watched Mr. Woodcock and The Bourne Ultimatum. I won't comment much on the two movies.

Whoa, that was one crazy week to start of season 3.
Last thing, I forgot that "Free Hug Day" was on Sept. 10. It was promoted on Facebook and I wasn't even sure about "participating". I did hug a friend on Monday and then hugged another person the day later. I never expect to participate randomly.

Pre-"Season Premiere": Music Tastes As of Late - S3E0X

In a way to prepare my third season for the blog, I will explain about the kinds of music and songs I have been listening since the Summer. There were a change in phase in what I listen to. I would usually try to keep up to date with Chinese songs (i.e. Cantopop) but I changed around my listening schedule for certain Hong Kong radio stations on the Internet. Since the beginning of 2007, I did return to listen to Chinese radio programs but it has been the overnight program. I still listen to the Cantopop "classics" from the 1980s to early 1990s. Right now, I have phased back to listening to English songs.
Sorry, no "Beautiful Girls" by Sean Kingston and "Hey There Delilah" by Plain White T's. They are not my cup of tea. :)

People are back to work and kids going back to school. It is the end of summer holidays.
A brief Summer in review. The best was going to the Kanye West concert at Ottawa Bluesfest and the Feist concert.

Entertainment - The Toronto International Film Festival is happening and there seems to be lots of buzz for Ang Lee's "Lust, Caution."
The 2007 MTV Video Music Awards is happening on September 9. There's so much talk about Britney Spears making her comeback performance.

Music - The world of music lost an important figure in opera, that is Luciano Pavarotti.
On the day he passed away, the first song I listen on my iPod when catching the bus was "Miss Sarajevo" with U2 from the Original Soundtracks 1.

Oh gee, what a way to avoid writing an entry for August. What a way to end Summer with this by going to an Aerial Park where I walked thru obstacles and gliding through the zip line. Here's a photo from September 2, 2007. It was at Camp Fortune Aerial Park.
I wished that people like Amal, Michael and Sarim came along to the adventure. Knowing me, there is bound to be laughs when dealing with the outdoors.

"The News" - Lots of scandals hitting the news. An NBA referee being corrupt, drug and doping in the Tour de France and Barry Bonds tying Hank Aaron's home run record.
The big one has to be Lindsay Lohan being arrested for DUI and possession of cocaine.
Drew Carey is the new host of "The Price is Right."

Music - Finally, a new #1 in the UK Chart. It is "The Way I Are" by Timbaland featuring Keri Hilson & D.O.E. Umbrella by Rihanna featuring Jay-Z has been dethroned to #3.

Movies - The Simpsons Movie was released on Friday. Overall, there are mixed reviews to the movie, but it did not deter fans from going out. The movie grossed approximately $73 million for the opening weekend. The Simpsons Movie was enjoyable and funny. It kind of felt like an extended episode.

Comic Talk - What a way to end July with some horrendous comics. I won't go into detail. The known culprits are All-Star Batman & Robin, The Boy Wonder #6 and Wolverine #55.
Other comics coming were Batman #666, The Mighty Avengers #4 and Amazing Spider-Man #542.

Music - There seems to be a lot of happiness because "Umbrella" by Rihanna got knocked off the #1 spot on Billboard's Hot 100 Singles Chart. It has been #1 for 7 weeks. The new #1 is "Hey There Delilah" Plain White T's. Although, Umbrella is still #1 in the UK for 10 weeks. Now, it is the longest in the year 2000. There has been grumblings among casual listeners and even a few radio DJs. Let's just say that Umbrella has become annoying. "Ella, ella, eh, eh eh."

The Final Harry Potter Book - Yes! On late Friday night, the final installment of Harry Potter was released worldwide. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is the 7th book. Which characters die? Just find out.
I still haven't read the Harry Potter books. I went to check out Chapters bookstore for the excitement of Potter-mania.

Around Ottawa - Ottawa Bluesfest is gone, another festival is happening, that is the Ottawa International Chamber Festival. This is for classical music fans. It's good to have festivals running in the Summer time.

Comic Talk - A new feature somewhat to keep the "week-in-review" interesting. It's still in the preliminary stages. Picks this past week were World War Hulk #2 (of 5), Justice League of America #11 and Captain America #28. All 3 titles were good. World War Hulk #2 was great because it was just heart pounding action. Justice League of America #11 was a breath of fresh air because the guest artist put in a different technique to the the art.

Note: Again, WildWorks Extra is mainly a "week-in-review" entry of things happening in the world and locally. Mostly pop culture talk within the web and television. My own blog entries will return in the Fall and it acts like a sort of episodes like on television.

It has been a slow week except that Cisco Ottawa Bluesfest has started on July 4, 2007 with Van Morrison kicking it off.

July 7, 2007 was the big one with Live Earth. The cause is about the ever changing climate change.
Here's a badge from LiveEarth.org. It's not too late to watch the concerts.

Best performances in my opinion were Duran Duran, Madonna, Crowded House and Linkin Park. Linkin Park performing in Japan and Crowded House in Australia while the other 2 in London, UK.

Music - The day after Live Earth, "Umbrella" by Rihanna is still #1 in the UK. It has been #1 for 8 weeks. The longest in UK chart for 2007.

Movies - Transformers blew away in the box office with $152.5 million US for the week. It beat out Spider-Man which had $151 million US in its opening week back in 2002. The reviews for Transformers have been mixed with favorable reviews.

July 1st, Happy Canada Day (Canada is 140 years old) and it is also the 10th anniversary of the Hong Kong Handover from Britain to China. A lot of happenings within the news for the past week.

Entertainment - Paris Hilton was released from jail on June 25. The media frenzy was abuzz. What's next for Paris? A clean image, possibly
June 28th was when The Spice Girls have finally reunited and will have a world tour.

Wrestling - The biggest shock has been the death of Chris Benoit and his family. The aftermath is whether the WWE can withstand the criticism from the media.

Movies - Disney/Pixar's Ratatouille released on Friday. Great movie. Good for the kids and it was funny all over.

Around Ottawa - Soccer has come to Canada. The FIFA U-20 World Cup is all over Canada. Ottawa had Czech Republic against Argentina.

TV - Chalk one up for another great season of Doctor Who. It ended Series 3 in the UK and was able to get the episode. In the words of the Doctor, it's "fantasic!"

Not much happened in the pop culture media. Another part to WildWorks Extra I forgot mention is a what's in Ottawa section. This past week, I checked out a hip-hop dance at noon time. It's b-boy and b-girl dancing.
On Saturday, The Ottawa Dragon Boat Race Festival happened and I took part in the opening ceremony part. Here are photos from the liondance performance.
Lots of events happening throughout Ottawa. There was the International Chicken and Rib Cookoff on Sparks Street Mall.
Canada Day is coming up on July 1.

Finally, I decided to create WildWorks Extra. What is it? It is basically a week in review of sorts posted on Saturdays. It would be called the weekend edition. I try to write what happened in the media for the past week. I wish I had a video camera to cover topics and have it set in various locations in Ottawa. Although it would be difficult to do such tasks.
Let's start off with technology.
This past week, Apple Inc. launched their WWDC 07 and the big surprise happened to be Safari for Windows. Now, the web browser wars is really heating up.

Television
June 10 - It has been a buzz when the series finale of The Sopranos ended. Some people hated it and some people didn't mind it. I didn't really mind the ending except the silliness of Meadow having problems parallel parking.

June 15 - It's the end of an era for Bob Barker as he retired as host of "The Price is Right."

Not much to watch for the Summer months. The only TV show I would be intrigued would be "Hell's Kitchen" on FOX.

Wrestling
WWE Raw had their 3 hour special which dealt with the draft. The biggest surprise was Mr. McMahon "killed" when his limo exploded. How dubious can it be?

Music
Not much happening on the music scene as "Umbrella" by Rihanna is still #1 on Billboard's Hot 100 Single and UK charts.

Happy Father's Day to any fathers enjoying the day.

As for myself, it was an important day back on Tuesday, June 12 when I graduated from Carleton University. Again, I like to thanks friends who have given me a lot of congratulations. It made me feel proud and happy but in a way still not sunk in that I got my degree. :)

Yep, I am finally done with university and got my degree. It was great to see friends and classmates during the convocation on Tuesday. I couldn't be any happier and also congratulating them as well. What my future plan holds? I am not sure. Hope to take things in stride.
It was hot waiting at the old gym. I nearly tripped and stumbled getting back to my seat.

One-off Special #1 - Spring Entry

Heyhey, it has been awhile that I wrote something. This is a different entry as I try to sum up what has happened in the short Spring season.
Movies - The summer blockbuster movies has happened. So far, I have watched Spider-Man 3, Shrek the Third and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. My response to those three movies have not been positively great. I am very disappointed over Spider-Man 3 because I am still a comic fan and watching the 3rd installment was more of an insult to me.
Shrek the Third was alright but the formula is getting old, but it's more for the kids.
Pirates 3, I was excited because of Chow Yun-Fat. Now, there are mixed responses with this movie.
What's next? Transformers, Rataouille and maybe Ocean's 13.
Music - The latest releases from certain artists have been exciting. I am enjoying Feist's second album, "The Reminder." The funny thing is that I don't use CDs to listen to the music, I just get the songs from iTunes Store now. Talk about how technology has shifted.
TV Show - May sweeps is winding down. Lost season finale was excellent. I felt very satisfied because the previous season for Lost got me angry because the castaways felt like they were defeated. I had enough of the Rosie/Elisabeth debacle from The View.
Excitement in Ottawa - It's great that the Ottawa Senators have made it to the Stanley Cup Finals. Go Sens Go!

Finale: All Good Things (Come to an End) - S2E25

Yes, it's the song from Nelly Furtado. I know some people will think that Nelly Furtado is a sellout and etc. I don't care if she is a sellout! I like this song but more to the message, this entry is considered as a "season finale" because it's the final day of classes. Actually, Tuesday is the last day. I am writing this entry as a sort of conclusion for my time being at Carleton University.
In retrospect, I enjoyed my final year at Carleton University. I wasn't sure what kind of reception when taking the Canadian Studies classes. It really surprised me when the people in the classes were nice and outgoing. I really enjoyed the two 4th year classes that were taught by Peter Hodgins. I am also enjoying the other class with Peter Hodgins as well. If anyone reads this entry, all I can say to you for one last time, "you all ROCK!"
One unique thing about the people in Canadians Studies (grad students included) is that half seem to be from Toronto and some from Northern Ontario. Some people live in the East end (aka Gloucester and Orleans) and none from the West end. It kind of felt depressing that there was no one "representing" the West end of Ottawa.
The thing I will miss is being at the seminar room in the Canadian Studies department @ Dunton Tower because it was safety hazard. People will know how clumsy I am, but it was pretty hilarious having to do insane things in the room. Another joke is that I "live" in Canadian Studies lounge. Since the Fall, I kept being at the lounge due to the fact that I got wireless Internet. It was just luck having to get it.
What I miss was the Fall term classes. I found it more interesting than the Winter term. I find that Winter makes everyone lazy and not having the energy. I miss the excitement from the Fall term.
I kind of miss having class on Fridays. Call me crazy, I enjoyed the Friday afternoon class back in the Fall term.
An ironic thing during my time at Carleton was being at unusual classrooms. Whether it is the 9th floor of Loeb to 4499 Mackenzie Building to Leeds residences, it has been a funny experience being in different places where I never expected.

Why I chose "All Good Things (Come to an End) by Nelly Furtado? As the title says it, I think I had a fun time taking some of the classes this year and meet interesting people, but all things come to an end and it's time to move on.
Certain parts like "Flames to dust, lovers to friends, why do all things come to an end" bring an important message of moving on in life. Another part in the song which is edited off from radio is "and the sun was wondering if it should stay away for a day til the feeling went away, and the sky was falling on the clouds were dropping, and the rain forgot how to bring salvation." This part is near the end and I find it beautiful.
I also feel that people I know will be leaving to other pastures and will have to move on without them. I am realizing that friends are getting married, moving else or having a career change, it is like the past has become a distant memory.

As I end this entry for the second season, I like to thank this person for keeping in touch for so long. It was fun having to message you during your program and making me laugh when you mentioned things on-air.

Update - April 19, 2007. In the light of the shooting at Virgina Tech, here is an image for the 32 people who lost their lives. I am just privileged to live in a safe place, but there should be justice to stop individuals who post a threat to society.

Remembering Leslie Cheung Again - S2E24

Here is a bit of reprint from my original post last year with a bit of updating. I know April 1st is on Sunday, it's in case I forget to write it on the day.

It's been 4 years since Leslie Cheung left fans throughout Hong Kong and all over the world on April 1st. Everytime I listen to his song, I would feel sad because he is no longer around. I still remember that morning where I was woken up by my brother and I thought it was a joke, but I later realized it was true. I grew up watching Leslie Cheung in movies and on award shows and I never knew Hong Kong actors had impacts on my life. When I started listening to Cantopop in late 1999, it was his songs that brought me back to Hong Kong culture.

For the first time in awhile, I won't be listening to CRHK because their online streaming has been down since December 2006. I will be listening to RTHK to listen if they will play Leslie Cheung songs.

Tuesday Update - S2E23

So far, I got one essay done and it was for Canadian Public Policy. Again, I writing this entry in the Canadian Studies Lounge over at Dunton Tower.
It's the second last Tuesday of having to wake up early and going for 8.30am class.
I am happy I got the Airport Extreme with 802.11n draft. I could say that my MacBook Pro has gotten a bit faster. I am still unsure about the speed for 802.11n.
Adobe Creative Suite 3 is released, but the pricing is outrageously insane. It would be cool to get it.
What I thought about the Quebec election from last night? I think it was surprising and funny that Jean Charest almost lost his seat during the election. The province of Quebec would of been in chaos. The funny thing as well was that I watched the results on the Internet via CBC.ca.

Countdown to the End: 4 Left and Live @ Carleton - S2E22

As I am at the Canadian Studies Lounge over at Dunton Tower trying to write up my essay. This is probably the second last Monday to be at the lounge. I reflect back to having a Monday class. Last term, I only had a night class for Monday at 6pm. It seemed odd and not great because I miss out on Monday primetime television.
Now, I have an afternoon class this term with Peter Hodgins and it has been fun and enjoyable. It was fun to know people from last term and from the lounge.

O' Captain, My Captain - S2E21

It's been in the media since Wednesday and I am pretty surprised about the attention it is getting. What do I think about Captain America being killed? Pretty good, but why couldn't it be done in the #7 of Civil War? There has been some negative response to how Civil War ended. In my opinion, I am not very disappointed, nor excited with the outcome of it. My overall position to Civil War has been neutral. I didn't care who side to choose, I just wanted to read a good story. I was disappointed with the lateness, but I accept the reason that the artist had health problems. Lateness is common in comics nowadays.
The thing is, people shouldn't be too worked up with Captain America being dead. I mean, no one shouldn't get too upset because it is just a comic and it's just a fantasy. It's not the thrust of life.
Even though, I am Canadian, something about Captain America being cool and amazing sticks as a favorite hero. I just like his shield because of the materials.
It's great to serve a good memory to where was I when it happened? Well, I was at the comic store and I informed the employees about it. That could be a "memorable" day.
Kudos to a friend who got it. I hope you enjoyed it.

Sort of Understanding Islam and the Frigid Weather - S2E20

I was planning to write up something for the blog, but it kept being held back due to a sense of writer’s block. But yea, I have wanted to write about the way that Islam has been portrayed in the media lately. Don’t get me wrong, I am not becoming a Muslim or what not. It’s just that I understand the faith and culture of it. It has been close to a decade because of friends and people in high school who were practicing Islam. What surprised me was my mom was Muslim when she was young in Hong Kong. I went back in Summer of 2000 and went to the cemetery to find out there were Arabic writing on the tombstone. OK, enough of my inner ramblings, this leads me to “Little Mosque on the Prairie” on CBC. I really enjoyed the show because it is funny and I seem to understand the Muslim culture in some form. I did take the intro to Religion class several years ago and went to a Mosque for the fieldwork assignment.
I just wish I can joke to fans of "24" by mistakenly call Morris, Yasir because the actor (Carlo Rota) is on both shows and I prefer him in comedy over the suspenseful action.

The weather, oh gosh, I barely survived having to go out in the frigid cold. -40 degrees is amazingly brutal. The worse thing for me was taking the express bus (and no! I am not going to tell you bus number because it’s self-explanatory :P) to get to Carleton. What I didn’t know was that the O-Train was not running. I took a long bus ride from west to east. Not very pleasant as well, but at least I didn't arrive late to Carleton.
Another bad thing was my scarf gave the smell of Vanilla Breeze from the Glade air freshener. Not pleasant when I was covering my face from the winds. I haven't used my "trusty" scarf for a year.
I am happy that I haven't got sick and I broke free of the Chinese New Year curse. I had been cursed for 2 years when I got sick during or prior to Chinese New Year. I felt safer this year!

A cheapless plug to put “Peter Hodgins” again on my blog entry and then searched on Google. I enjoy the Globally Wired Canada: Cultural Issues class and I really enjoy the people in the class. No matter how Facebook is mentioned and being “haunted” by political philosophers like Hobbes, Aristotle, and etc. I’d go bonkers having to hear those things.

Post Reading Week - S2E19

I was suppose to write this on Monday, but due to a major headache, I am writing this on Tuesday. What I did for Reading Week was..... nothing! I did not do much but I was recovering from my week of craziness. I had to endure 2 papers, a midterm and several lion dance performances. Doing nothing for reading week was a way to "recover" from the hectic week.
Oh yea, even though it was my final Reading Week, it was also the last time my birthday was held during Reading Week.
The question I would get is how old I am? Well, I don't feel like 27 and I don't seem to feel old. The funny thing on Monday was someone guessing my age would be 23. I do look young.
Since "The Departed" won for Best Picture at The Oscars, I did get The Departed on DVD and I did not like it. Why? Because it's a remake from Infernal Affairs, the Hong Kong movie. It was laughable in my opinion because they rehashed the scenes from the Hong Kong version. I also thought that Martin Scorsese just sat in the director's sat and did not do much. It felt like he put his stamp on the movie. During Reading Week, I had to rewatch Infernal Affairs(I and III) in order to erase my experience from watching The Departed. I didn't watch IA II because it is a prequel of sorts.
That's all I have to write.

19 Days After the New Year - S2E17

Finally, I am writing a new entry. I was suppose to write something on New Year's Day, but I was bogged down and I couldn't think what to write about.
It's 2007 and so far, it has been odd. Since December, there was no snow and it was a soggy green Christmas. Also, I couldn't get a Nintendo Wii. Briefly fast forward to January, which is now and things have been smooth. I was surprised I did well in Peter Hodgins' Canadian Studies classes. Another slight change in January, I was suppose to have Peter 4 times overall, but I changed around my schedule around and I have Peter two times in the Winter term. Therefore, for the Fall and Winter/Spring term, I have him 5 times.
What does 2007 bring? I am not sure, but I will be happy to finish my courses at Carleton soon.
Looking back on the final 4 months of 2006, I was pleased to meet new people in the Canadian Studies class. It brought on new challenges and plus that I had problems with people in Political Science. My experiences several years ago weren't as good because I seem to have find people not approachable and mostly snobbish.

Welcome Snow and "The End" For Now - S2E16

What a Friday makes when wet snow gets dumped on. I wasn't ready for the snow yet.
Before my presentation, I had to make some errands. I had to go to Chinatown to buy food. Took a long time getting there due to the freezing rain/snow/sleet. When I got back to Carleton, I walked by the 4th Floor Unicentre to Tory and remembered about the "Hugs For Aids" since December 1 is World Aids Day. I saw a friend and gave him a hug. A handshake would of been nice, but I was carrying a lot of things. Too bad I didn't get a red ribbon.
I enjoyed my energetic presentation in Peter Hodgins' CDNS4400 class - Cultural Landscapes and Cultural Identity in Canada. It was in the "kindness" of my heart to provide food for the people in class. It was linked to my landscape project, which is Chinatown in Ottawa.
It was a nice way to end off the Canadian Studies classes. It was an unusual way to get hurt again in the classroom. I bumped over the chair and I slipped and fell, along with the chair. It was not pleasant. It's been a hazard for me.
After class, I went down to Rideau Centre and went to Roots and got a toque. It's a yearly tradition for me to get toques, I try to get zany kinds of toques. I dunno if it will be my final time to get a Roots toque because I always go for time, but they no longer make any apparel for the Canadian Olympic team.
Then, I also dropped by to the BS and chatted with someone.

This is the last "episodic" entry of 2006 since it will be exam time and Christmas season. I will blog a bit after exams as a "special", but it won't be part of the season number and "episodic" entries.
Part 2 of season two will return in January. The only problem being that I got a reduced schedule since I will be taking 3 classes. One more with Peter Hodgins.

Some Loose Ends to Say Before The Fall Terms Finishes - S2E15

This is not the end yet, I just wanted to say that it has been a fun term taking three of Peter Hogdins' classes. Although, I am not sure how I will do after the exams. It has been a blast.
Some loose ends. I've been bombarded with questions by people within Canadian Studies asking me if I "live" in the Canadian Studies Lounge and "why are you always there?" The answer is no. Here's my reason, I did not expect the 12th floor of Dunton Tower to have wireless Internet access around the 2nd or 3rd week of September. I usually hang out at the tunnels or the library, if there is space. It's ridiculous finding a place to sit. Also, the readings for Peter's 4th year classes are in the lounge so I can read them through. Another thing is that I can never live without the Internet.
The funny thing is that I made it 5 days to going to the lounge. As usual, I only have class 4 days a week because I don't have class on Wednesdays. All I can say it was good timing that I saw someone and showed him my comics.

To people from CDNS2210, CDNS4200 and CDNS4400, I gotta say that you all are great and I will probably miss you since I won't be seeing anyone in the Winter term.
Even though, I ended up getting hurt on occasion for Thursday's class.

Since it is this time of year when music artists come out with their greatest hits album.
Here it is, U218 Singles. I got it on iTunes and I can't stop listening to it on my iPod. The Deluxe version on iTunes includes live tracks from the 2005 Milan concert.

Don't ask why, but "someone" told me to make another entry for my blog. I know entering my blog has been sporadic at times due to my unusual scheduling at Carleton. I made an entry on Thursday, so this is a rarity of sorts. So yeah, this person wanted to give a "shout out" and we were messaging while I was in class, the Friday morning class. Also, mentioned about Target's Choxie.
Whoever I tagged (A Facebook.com "exclusive"), you will find out who tagged or not :D

Onto the other class (the Friday afternoon class). Peter Hodgins' Cultural Landscape and Cultural in Canada. It was an interesting and fun today because before class, Peter opened up some food from another floor in Dunton Tower. Somehow, there was a conference and the people over-ordered food. It was nice to have wraps and fruits. It's been the second time(not in a row) that there happens to be "free" food in the Canadian Studies department. It seems that Peter is synonymous with his laughter and "love" with food.
Now, with class. I dunno why, but I was the "savior" because my Apple laptop(Macbook pro) worked on the projector. Sorry to PC fans, I know you are not a fan of Apple Computers.
Also, I can't stop laughing with the songs I played from my iPod and iTunes. A grad student was singing along and it was funny.

Rain Rain, Thursday - S2E13

I am not liking this weather lately. What's with the rain? This ain't Vancouver. I had been wearing a different shoe and it made me look tacky. Blue shoes and for the long time, I decided to wear a shoe that is not adidas.
Well, enjoyed a nice presentation on Canadian Television in CDNS4200 aka Canadian Popular Culture. I hope I am not sucking up. I couldn't stop laughing with the Kids in the Hall clips. Though, I really wanted to see the "Street Legal" opening. :) "Post" presentation, I decided to go to Mike's Place and chill out with the presentation and with Peter. Plus some "guest cameos". Originally, I was suppose to take the bus to downtown and take the express bus, but I decided to go to Mike's Place instead. Supposedly, I was planning to stick around for a bit, but decided to stay longer because it was interesting to hear about what people are talking about.
It was entertaining and fun having to show a Youtube video of Diet Coke & Mentos. Geez, I don't even bother watching "gross out" videos. I watch "vintage" music videos from Hong Kong.
It was funny to hear some good stories from the prof, Peter Hodgins (I have to put his full name on this entry for Google purposes) and from the gang in the class.
Though, I still haven't got over the other Hodgins class from last Friday. It was just bizarre.

Comic picks. Finally, Civil War #5 came out and I was partially surprised to see a Marvel character make a "truimph" return to the Marvel Universe. Lately, that "person" hasn't been in the mainstream Marvel Universe.
Another favorite comic is Astonishing X-Men #18. The conclusion to "Torn." Gotta hand it to Joss (Buffy, The Vampire Slayer) Whedon and John (Planetary) Cassaday for an "astonishing" story.
Other picks are 100 Bullets #78 and New Avengers #25.

Last point, I am still enjoying my Macbook Pro. :D
I also never expected someone to be using Bluetooth during CDNS4200 class and "try to steal" songs on my laptop. Well, you can't use my songs because it's protected. It's from the iTunes Store. Too bad, so sad. :D

What a Weird Friday - S2E12

I don't know how to explain it, but in Peter Hodgins' CDNS4400 class, it became strange because the one presentation was a one man show and somehow the partner for the presentation showed up late and then left like 15 mins later.
It was a bizarre time in class because of it. I looked at Peter and he was clueless and I acting puzzled myself. I looked at others if there were looking surprised as well. It was just downright bizarre on Friday.
As usual for myself, Friday is always my brutal day because of waking up early and going for early morning class and then the afternoon. I know it's depressing to have a Friday afternoon class.
After the short class, a few of us, including the prof. went to Mike's Place and it was enjoyable and nice to hear "interesting" stories.

Comic picks from this past Wednesday.
Batman #658. All I will say that I was pretty disappointed with it. The final part of Grant Morrison and Andy Kubert's first run on the Cape Crusader ended on a flat note.
Two other comics I picked weren't from this week, they were from October. The Authority #1 (Another Grant Morrison comic) and Civil War: Choosing Sides.

Macbook Pro and Presentation - S2E11

Well, I am happy and partially relieved that I got my Macbook Pro and did the CDNS4200 presentation.
It couldn't come at a right time with the new laptop. It arrived on Wednesday and I was just happy to getting it. I still need to get used to the two finger scrolling and etc.

I don't know what to say, I am pretty sore from the tumble I had before class started. I thought I wasn't in any pain but after leaving Dunton Tower, I was feeling sore on my left leg.
All in all, I guess the presentation went well. Humourous or not, it was enjoyful using the remote control to use the presentation slides.

Now, it's time to try writing essays soon. It is crunch time.

This hasn't been a great week for me because the house has no heat, furnace is broken and we need a new one. I haven't had a good sleep for the past few days.
No classes with Peter Hodgins until next Thursday. Except Tuesday where it will be a TA teaching.
Lucky or not, I still had to go to Carleton on Thursday to talk to meet up with my Canadian Humour group. I really wanted to stay home, but had to for the sake of the group.
Oh doh, if I write Peter Hodgins on my entries, my blog will be linked on Google if you type "Peter Hodgins".

I don't know what I have been concentrating on. The midterm for Canadian Provincial Politics for Monday, the group presentation for CDNS4200 - Canadian Popular Culture or trying to plan out the essays as soon as possible.
I am a bit nervous on the presentation next week. Whoever I tagged on Facebook, you know who I am talking. :D
Though, I got a "secret weapon" to showing it. Though, it's not Powerpoint. I don't know if you guys will like the effects.

What I am waiting for is the Macbook Pro with Intel Core 2 Duo processor. Though, I am not sure when it will be delivered. Oh, the one I picked is 2.16GHz, 1GB RAM, 120GB hard drive, 15 inch screen, and iWork '06 preinstalled. No glossy screen. I hope to get Aperture in the future and fiddle around with digital photos.
Too bad I won't be able to use it for the presentation next week. The iBook G4 will do for now.
It will be nice to use it on November 24 when I have a presentation for CDNS4400.

As for comics this week(to whoever got tagged on Facebook, you know who I am talking to :D), my picks are Seven Soldiers #1, Jack of Fables #4, New Avengers #24 and Planetary #26.
A new graphic novel released this week that I picked up is American Virgin Vol. 1: Head. I already have the first four issues in comic form, but the "extras" got me hooked, so I had to pick it up.

TV Chat: I had a chance to watch Torchwood via BT and I putted it on my iPod. All in all, the Doctor Who spin-off is excellent. It is edgy and more for grown-ups. I like the linking to the events that happened in Doctor Who. I don't know what time CBC will air Torchwood at. It is nice to see CBC getting credit on BBC television.
Another show that I also found on BT is Season 4 of Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law. I haven't had a chance to find Vol. 2 on DVD and I haven't watched any of Season 3 because I don't know if Teletoon aired further eps of it. I am a bit lost on the series because I haven't watched further than Season 1.

CDNS4200 - Canadian Popular Culture summary hijinks. The funny thing happened in class when one person could not talk due to some project/assignment/whatever. It was funny Peter Hodgins made fun of that person (you know who you are if you are reading this). What's more embarrassing for me is that I don't watch The Family Guy, The Jon Stewart Show and The Colbert Report. It's not that I don't care about the shows, I just don't have the interest. Oh yeah, same goes for Prison Break. Actually, I got class on Monday night, so it's not a big deal.
Glocalization. Oh man, that word just haunted me because I have Peter from another class and he explained about it.

Oh yes, comic pick ups from Wednesday.
I picked up Wildcats #1, Runaways #21, 100 Bullets #77 and my PICK of the WEEK is Fables: 1,001 Nights of Snowfall HC.
Two other comics I picked were Criminal #1 and Fables #1 Special Edition(for 25 cents US, 35 cents here). Those two comics were out on previous weeks. I did not go to the comic store for 2 weeks.

My Life Is Funny - S2E8.5

It is still Tuesday, so it's somewhat entry #8 or 8.5. Plus, I really need to write about myself being funny because it has been in my head for so long and I hadn't got a chance to blog it out.

Lately, I've been thinking that my life has been funny because in certain classes, there's been so much linking up from other classes. Oh wait! It's Peter Hodgins' classes in Canadian Studies.
Funny thing today was I bumped into someone and he said the word, "Renfew", then in class today, I hear the word Renfrew again from the prof, but he was making jokes about it. I don't know how things are coincidental. Life is just silly now.
What was intimidating on Monday was going to St. Pats building at Carleton. I don't know why, something about it scared me. It felt I didn't feel welcomed being in the building. But I walked by and saw this prof, Christopher Waddell in the building. He was in his office. I somehow watch him on CBC Newsworld talking about politics or what not. He uses a Mac, LOL
It's been tiring for the past 2 days so far. I need more sleep.
Why do I keep thinking about gang from CDNS4200 and CDNS4400? Because you guys rock :D

Live@Carleton, Finally A Relaxing Week - S2E8

Man, I almost went through a brutal 2 weeks lately. Right now, I am somehow relieved with all the mayhem. I still need to do some readings and also plan on some essays. At least, it won't be a stressful time. I still haven't had a chance to update this blog. It is just that I am always at the 12th floor of Dunton Tower at Carleton University, which I am at. At least I get wireless internet.

Oh okie, I guess people have heard or seen about it. Yes, I am talking about The Hoff, David Hasselhoff's novelty song, "Jump In My Car."
Why on Earth!!! Well, you should know that cheesy song is #3 in the UK chart. I did listen to it in the afternoon. It's laughable at best, but I will say that it's not my favorite song unless you want tease me on it. OK, I foolishly added the video on my iPod.
Thanks to an "anonymous person" in my Canadian Studies class who made me watch the video. All I can say is, "Thanks alot!" You almost killed me. :)
But hey, I love pop culture no matter what.

Overkill - S2E5

Due to the unexpecting nature of getting Carleton University in an odd manner, it will be difficult to do a "Live@Carleton" entry for the time being. I take my own apology for not getting to update the blog lately. Ok, here goes.
Yes, as the title says it, "overkill" is becoming the theme for my Fall term. Why? 3 reasons;
1) I chose three Canadian Studies classes with the same prof.
2) My Friday schedule is somewhat of an overkill because I got an 8.30am class and then another class at 2.30pm. I end at around 5pm, which feels depressing when leaving Carleton.
3)Two of Hodgins' class, I am the "brave soul" who will present first with a few people. Though, kind of coincidental because I have to deal with it in both classes. Good thing, it is a group presentation, but still nervous about it.

OK, ever since I started going to Carleton for several years, I've made up these types of themes when I had discussion group or class(starting in 3 year). Like PSCI3004(Political Parties & Elections in Canada), I realized that there were several people with Apple laptops and it made me smile.

For the Canadian Popular Culture class (a 4th year Canadian Studies class), I dunno if it's there's a theme or not, but I feel like I am dealing with some Journalism students there. Not a bad thing and just in case if one of you read it, you people are cool. The undergrad and grad students Journalism students :D

Oh yeah, for people in that class who use Facebook, I just want to say, YOU ROCK!!!!! :D It's fun to have contacts and somehow talk about that site in class, which was pretty hilarious. I can't name names, but you know who you are.
I hope you guys and gals can leave a comment on here. :)
I really want to get to know some of you better. I know I am somewhat "quiet" in class, but I make goofy faces whenever Hodgins says to everyone if they understood what he said or make some funny jokes.

I haven't had a chance to keep up with the entries because I have been recovering from my cold and bad throat. It just hasn't been a great week because of it.
I had a chance to watch thru Survivor: Cook Islands. My thought is, "meh." Not much happened, but I am rooting for the Asian team. "Go Puka" :D
Finally changed my new look, got rid of my Roots jacket and changed it to another new Roots jacket. :) Silly me.

Kind of funny that the prof said I acted like Kramer from 'Seinfeld' on Thursday. The only problem with me is that I never bothered watching Seinfeld. I'm pretty boring when it comes to certain TV shows that people watch.
Another thing that is scaring me in Peter Hodgin's two 4th year Canadian Studies classes is that I seem to be the oldest person there. Me being the 2-6, augh. I know I somehow look young, LOL.
As for Facebook, I started using it in late August. Why? I have no clue how I got hooked on it.

Liondance performances on the weekend. I am thrilled about it since a few guys are returning from vacation and work scheduling.

What I Missed and What To Expect

This is still S2E1 for this blog entry.
Since I took a break and ended "season 1" for my blog, what I didn't get to write were TV shows and music. I didn't expect to hear some competition from Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, and etc. In my opinion, my choices for the Summer Songs of 2006 are Hips Don't Lie by Shakira f/ Wyclef Jean and Crazy by Gnarls Barkley.
As for television, I didn't know that Fox made a head start when putting season premieres for Prison Break and House M.D.
Oh yeah, the big talk last week was CBS Evening News with Katie Couric and Rosie O'Donnell on The View.
I watched both and they seemed to be alright.
Another show that has been in the news is Survivor: Cook Islands. I don't know what to expect. The big fuss is the 4 tribes being separated by race sounds like it's not a big deal.

What to expect coming up?
The Law & Order season premieres, including Special Victims Unit and Criminal Intent.
LOST will be in October, NOOOOOOOOO

What else am I anticipating on CBC?
CBC News: The Hour. Almost less than a month away and I wonder what will Strombo put up his sleeve for season 3 of The Hour.
Another show is Doctor Who Series/Season 2. I already watched it on my iPod video, but I am looking forward to rewatching it again.

To start off season 2, today is the 5th anniversary of 9/11. The attacks in New York City and Washington changed everyone because we are now in a reality where no one is safe.
The destruction of the World Trade Center brought shock and sadness because it was once stood as the landmark of NYC.

End of Blog, Season 1

I guess it could of been awhile back when I should of ended blogging for a bit since it's the Summer season. The "upcoming" season will start in September. Ending at 30 posts seems like an equivalent to almost a season.
So far, changes have happened. Two friends will be leaving Ottawa. Mr. Crick, who I have known for a few seasons, I mean year, is off to Boston and longtime friend, Eric Chan is off to Japan.
I don't know who I will be seeing when returning to Carleton University in my final year (I hope) and "season." :)

No changes on the blog, it will be the same, no new look.
The only new look for me will be new glasses(coming soon) and a new Roots jacket.

So, for the remaining weeks of August, I am not writing an entry.
Hmmm, I wonder if Miss Alyson Hau is reading this blog. Oh well, it will be searched on Google under "Alyson Hau."
I think the CBC(Ahem, The Hour gang) should sign her, I mean George Stroumbo should check up on her website. Though, the slight problem maybe the visa issue. Oh well, just kidding. Although, it would be nice of her to come to Canada. :D

Oh man, it's August and I didn't know that time flies by so fast. Well, at least I want to go back to Carleton University and hopefully finish my year for 2006-2007.
Insane day for me because I was expecting a call from a friend and I had to wait for pretty long. At least it was worth it because I won't be seeing him for awhile. I hope he enjoys The Walking Dead HC Vol. 1 and other goodies I gave to him as his parting gift to Boston.
This week's picks for comics, NONE. It's the first week of August, there's not much good comics out to start it off.
It looks like I will have no new comics for next week. What a bummer and how depressing for me.

Went To Ottawa Bluesfest On Friday Night

It's been awhile that I went to a concert. I went to the Metric concert at Bluefest. It was a good concert and the only problem being that I am not familiar with songs by Metric. The funny thing that happened was meeting up a friend and I gave him my ticket and he got his wristbands and not pay. It's odd that Bluesfest has becoming "hip" by bringing in big stars like Nelly Furtado, Rihanna and others who don't have a style to Blues music.
The past several days seem to be very hot and going out to Bluesfest was just unbearable. I was sweating like crazy. Thank goodness I did not take the bus back home.
Summer is totally in full swing.

Well, it's been awhile that I haven't blogged. I was suppose to write an early July entry, but I just forgot. Exciting July so far. I hosted a BBQ on July 2, the day after Canada Day, gee. Overall, my friends liked it and I went bonkers and almost lost my voice.
Doctor Who Series 2 ended in the UK and the final two episode was just amazing. I got an unexpected gift from a friend who works at The Comic Book Shoppe. All the hard work by transferring episodes of Doctor Who to his iPod video really paid off.
Watched Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest on July 7 and it was not bad.

The second photo, you see a comic called "Mouse Guard." By fluke, I got the comic on July 3 and paid at normal Canadian price, around $3. Right now, that comic is fetching at least $50-60. That's just crazy.

Spider-Man revealing his identity in Civil War #2. I hope Marvel Comics makes it good. There seems to be a good and bad point to Spidey revealing himself.

How Wonderful

Well, another comic talk this week. The comic I like to blog about is Wonder Woman #1. DC relaunched it this week and so far, it has been "wonderful." The writer on the helm is former OC writer, Allan Heinberg. The art is drawn by Terry Dodson.

Well, here's the response I had with Allan Heinberg from MySpace. I gotta say, thank you George Strumboloupolos for plugging MySpace like crazy. I have been using MySpace for awhile, but I never realized that celebrities are using it. Here's my response.

Oh yeah, I bought 2 copies. One for myself and another for a friend who doesn't know he's getting it. :)
I kind of regret not getting Young Avengers due to being skeptical, but gave it to my friend. My friend totally loved Young Avengers, plus he's an OC fan as well.
I read Young Avengers before giving it to my friend. I gotta say that it's great. At least, I hope Marvel puts it out on oversized hardcover, then I will be happy instead.
The sad part is that my friend is going off to Boston for law school in August. So, I will be picking up the slack and getting your comic work. :D
Looking forward to Young Avengers Season 2 next year.

Last thing, I wanted to get the Adam Kubert variant, but it could be expensive because the owner prices it at over $10 or $20 Canadian. "

What A Wednesday

Oh boy, I missed The Hour on Wednesday. For some reason, I had to record Gameshow Marathon. Hey, it's the Price Is Right and I grew up watching it.
On Tuesday night, I went to the Canadian Museum of Civlization for CBC's Foreign Correspondent Forum. It was great and informative. I just hope I am not shown in the crowd for tonight's airing on CBC Newsworld. I was able to get Peter Mansbridge's signature. I wanted to ask him about George Strumbo, but I couldn't think of a question linking to George. I only asked him if he uses an iPod and he does. LOL
I missed Wednesday's edition of The Hour and George talked to Adrienne Arsenault as part of CBC's Foreign Correspondents Week. Damn, I missed it.

Comic picks for me are Runaways #16, Ultimate Fantastic Four #30 and Superman/Batman #26(got 2 copies, I hope my friend is not reading this blog)
Plus, I picked up Son of #6 for my friend as well.
What's special about Superman/Batman #26? Well, it's a tribute to a boy who passed away in 2005. It was Jeph Loeb's son, Sam. He had a 3 year battle with cancer. I know I have been talking to an employee at The Comic Book Shoppe and he told he's not really a big fan of Jeph Loeb(for non comic fans, he did Teen Wolf starring Michael J. Fox) because his storytelling is awful. I never knew that Jeph Loeb is an awful writer. I kept that thought for so long with the notion that he is a bad writer. His son wrote a story featuring Robin and Superboy, but he was not able to finish it up because of his illness from cancer. What I liked about that issue is that it features 26 people on the comic. 11 writers and 15 artists on it to help finish Sam Loeb's story. It was a nice and fitting story. I won't criticize or be negative on it, I bought for what it's worth, the notion of reading for enjoyment.
I hope my friend will understand it when I give him that issue. Don't worry about the money and etc. Just keep it. No matter what, I am still getting you some comics as a surprise before you leave to Beantown, I mean B-Town, I mean BosSox Nation, I totally mean Boston.

Sorry for the lack of updates. Still haven't recovered from not catching up because my friend didn't get his comics(ie. 52).
I only picked up a graphic novel, Loveless Vol. 1 from Vertigo Comics for May 24, 2006.

Lost season finale. I wonder what will happen. Before Lost, I hope to watch CBC News: The Hour. Just hope it does not conflict my tv watching schedule.

X-Men: The Last Stand, I can't wait until Friday, although I'm worried it might be not good. *crosses fingers*

Summer Movies Have Started

OK, it's not Summer yet, but the hype of certain movies have started. I watched "The DaVinci Code" and my response is not excellent, nor bad. I had no clue what to say about the movie. I felt there was not any excitment.
Up next will be X-Men: The Last Stand. Yes, I am a big X-Men fan and I wonder what comic is based on. Since, the 2nd movie was based on "God Loves, Man Kills", which people did not know much about. It's an obscure comic from Marvel, based on their Graphic Novel series back in the 1980s.
I'm finally back in full swing with movies because last year, the only movie of 2005 that I watched was Batman Begins.
So far, The DaVinci Code did not excite me. I hope X-Men: The Last Stand will excite me.

Sorry for the lack of entry because my plan in meeting up my buddy(you know who you are) was changed and pushed back. So, I didn't want to leak out DC's weekly maxi-series, 52 to him.

Hmmmm, I wonder what George Strumbolopoulos of CBC News: The Hour would think of the movie come Monday on The Hour. :D Just a shameless plug and easy search if The Hour gang will find.
I also wonder if George watched any of the May sweeps...season finale and series finale of shows like Will & Grace and That '70s Show.
Short update: I am wondering if George watched "The DaVinci Code." What would be his thoughts of the movie. I totally wasn't pleased by it. That's all I can think because I had an idea on my blog on what to say about The Hour and my mind just went blank.

I have been watching the season finales of tv shows like the Law & Order series, Crossing Jordan, and etc. Am I hooked? Probably not, just bored. :)

Tried Out 2 New Chips

Even though, I was not feeling well on a Saturday, I managed to go out for grocery shopping. Being a curious consumer, there were 2 new chip flavours. One was Dorito's Sweet Chili Heat and the other was Miss Vickie's Roasted Red Pepper Grill.
Both of the chip seemed alright, but it wasn't good for my tongue since I can't stand HOT or spicy.
The Doritos tasted sweet in the beginning but burned my tongue. The Miss Vickie's Red Pepper almost burned my tongue. All in all, they were alright, but hot flavours cannot be good for me.

Old Event, New Event

Since one "big" event has ended, another new "big" event has come. That's right, Infinite Crisis #7 from DC Comics concludes while Marvel brings in their Civil War.
So far, I don't know what to say about the two comics. It's very difficult to explain since a friend is sick, while other buddies are occupied and one is away.
I need...assistance....please.
Just read The Exterminators #5 and boy, it was hilarious.
Well, there will be Free Comic Book Day this Saturday. That should give me some good motivation if I meet with my friend if he's well.
Second last point, I still haven't figure out how to theme my blog. It has been more about comics. So, I hope to mix it once in awhile.

Yep, I am in "hated" TO. :)
So far, the first day of the Toronto Comicon was pretty good, but the size is left to be desired.
I got a chance to get autographs from Jimmy Palmiotti, Amanda Conner and etc.
It was pretty heavy having to carry books. Ugh.
I'm kind of tired. Phew.
